Balance bikes

Freedom starts with balance.

A balance bike lets children learn steering, balance and control naturally—before pedals enter the picture.

Built around how children learn

We know a thing or two about teaching kids how to ride.

From first steps to confident gliding, the bike and the lesson should match the child—not the other way around.

01

Balance first

Without pedals in the way, children can focus on balance, steering and essential riding skills.

02

Confident kids

Feet stay close to the ground, helping young riders feel secure while they explore at their own pace.

03

Start young

Lightweight, adjustable bikes make it easier to begin with walking and short glides.

04

Simple steps

The progression is natural and easy to understand—for both children and parents.

How young can a child start?

Some children can begin from around 18 months old, as long as they can walk steadily and place both feet comfortably on the ground while seated.

How should a balance bike fit?

With the child seated, both feet should rest flat on the ground with a slight bend in the knees. They should reach the handlebars comfortably and walk the bike without standing on tiptoe.

Does the weight of the bike matter?

Yes. A lighter bike is easier for a small child to move, balance and control—even 500 g makes a difference.

The 30-second fit check

Set the bike to fit the child.

Saddle height is the most important adjustment. Start roughly 2.5 cm (1 inch) below the child’s inseam, then check their position while seated.

Correct fit

Feet flat, knees softly bent.

The child can sit comfortably, reach the handlebars and push the bike without stretching.

Seat too high

Only toes reach the ground.

Lower the saddle until both feet make full contact with the ground.

Seat too low

Knees are cramped and deeply bent.

Raise the saddle slightly while keeping both feet flat and the child secure.

Children grow quickly. Recheck the saddle and handlebar height every couple of months.

Balance bike or training wheels?

Balance first. Pedals next.

Both can get a child moving, but they teach the early stages of riding in different ways.

Balance bike

Balance and coordination come first.

  • Starts with walking and glidingThe child controls speed with their feet.
  • Builds balance from the beginningSteering, posture and coordination develop together.
  • Encourages independenceFeet can return to the ground whenever support is needed.
  • Moves naturally towards pedalsOnce balance is secure, pedalling becomes the next skill.
Training wheels

Pedalling comes before independent balance.

  • Starts with supported pedallingThe extra wheels hold the bicycle upright.
  • Balance is learned laterThe child practises balancing after the supports are removed.
  • Turning can feel differentThe bike may tip onto one training wheel while cornering.
  • Requires another transitionRemoving the wheels introduces a new stage of learning.

Our approach is simple: build balance first, then add pedals when the child is ready.

A simple progression

Walk. Glide. Turn. Pedal.

No rush, no comparison. We meet each rider where they are and help them move to the next meaningful skill.

Step 1

Comfort

Fit, posture and confident walking.

Step 2

Gliding

Feet up, eyes forward and steady balance.

Step 3

Control

Turning, braking and safe awareness.

Step 4

Pedalling

A supported transition when the child is ready.

Two ways to learn

Choose the right class for your child.

Balance-bike skills and learning to cycle are separate programmes, so your child can start at the stage that suits them.
